Catherine C. Elzie

Mrs. Catherine Elzie was born March 25, 1930, to the loving union of John and Louise Miller of Eastaboga, Alabama. Catherine married Gustora Elzie, Sr. July 20, 1953, in Saint Louis, Missouri. To this union four children were born, three boys and one girl. Catherine graduated from high school at the age of 16, from the Calhoun county training school, where she was class treasurer, class of 1946-47. She attended Dillard University where she successfully completed 2 years and was at the top of her class. She then transferred to St. Mary’s Infirmary where she was the treasurer of her class and she graduated at the top of her class with a B.S. in nursing in 1952. She held nursing positions in several hospitals in the surrounding area. At both the Jewish Hospital and Maralee Nursing Home, she was the assistant director of nursing. Catherine was a wonderful mother, instilling in her children the qualities for a successful life, unconditional love, hard work, commitment, and perseverance. Catherine leaves to mourn her passing: son Gustora Elzie, Jr. and wife Arthea Elzie, grandsons Derandy Chappell, Michael Jennings, Nicholas Elzie, Spencer Elzie, Lucas Elzie and Connor Elzie, daughter Kathy Elzie, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Gregory Elzie, of Wentzville, Missouri and Patrick Elzie of Hamburg, Germany, his former wife Barbara Elzie, his children, Malcolm Elzie, Eveline Elzie, and Jonathan Elzie. Great-grandchildren Sophia Elzie and Boston John Michael Jennings. She was predeceased by her husband Gustora Elzie, Sr. And one grandson Duncan Elzie. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends and relatives who will greatly miss her. Catherine loved her church family of the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, of which she was a member for 68 years. She was an adult Sunday School teacher, president of the choir, member of the missionary society, and served on the mother’s board. Words can never convey our deepest gratitude and appreciation for all of the expressions of kindness and sympathy shown to us during our darkest hour. The cards, flowers, and prayers will serve to encourage us in the days ahead.
